Prof Sam Adie has a busy research and academic practice. From an early stage in his career, Sam noticed that the best surgeons were those who combined care and skill in clinical medicine, with decision making based on scientific evidence.
Prof Adie’s research training commenced prior to his specialist clinical training. He completed a clinical Master of Sports Medicine, a Master of Public Health with elective in clinical epidemiology and statistics, then a Doctor of Philosophy in the field of evidence based medicine. His academic practice is affiliated with the University of New South Wales. He has won numerous awards for his research with competitive funding of ~$9.5 million and runs a series of clinical trials to improve outcomes after joint replacement and injury.
Prof Adie is interested in clinical effectiveness research: finding out how well things work in real life scenarios, and whether their benefits outweigh their harms. There is a strong focus on research in clinical settings, and in particular clinical trials, systematic reviews, and registry studies.
